Black Marsh, (also known as "Argonia"), is one of the nine Provinces of Tamriel and the homeland of the Argonians. The Argonians are perfectly adapted to these swampland rainforests. The province is filled with "great inland waterways and impenetrable swamps". The dense forests, swampy inland rivers, and mangrove thickets make it nearly impossible to reach the interior of Black Marsh, unless an Argonian. Many explorers who are not Argonian usually end up dead either killed by the native fauna of Black Marsh or killed by disease and the Argonians. Because of this only the native Argonians can successfully travel the province. The Dunmer of neighboring Morrowind have made a practice of raiding the region for slaves, and this is particularly practiced by members of House Telvanni.
Cyrodiil, also known as the Imperial Province, is the capital province of the Empire in Tamriel and is the homeland of the Imperial race. It is situated in the center of Tamriel, where the Emperor, along with his Elder Council, lives and rules from the Imperial City. Cyrodiil is a wealthy and powerful nation and is the center of the Empire.
Elsweyr (commonly pronounced "ELSE-where") is a region of the continent of Tamriel. As of the 4E 201, the province is separated into two nations, both of which are client states of the Aldmeri Dominion. Anequina to the North incorporates a desert like badlands fairly similar to that of Hammerfell, whilst to the South lies Pelletine it’s geography consisting of a variety of dense jungles and woodland comparable to that of Valenwood. The province is bordered by Valenwood to the West, Cyrodiil to the North and East and Black Marsh to the East, across the Topal Sea.
Hammerfell is an arid land consisting mostly of deserts, mountains, and grasslands. The Alik’r Desert takes up all of the western region of Hammerfell, and is widely regarded as the most inhospitable region in all of Tamriel. Until the coming of the Ra Gada in the eight hundreds of the First Era, the deserts were populated only by monstrous beasts, including giant scorpions. While the fauna of the Alik’r Desert remained deadly into the Third Era, the Redguards had managed to significantly reduce the presence and threat of those creatures. The Alik’r Desert is also the home to ruins of countless civilizations that had perished beneath its sands. Its blazing heat, ferocious sandstorms, and lack of water, makes it nearly impossible to survive in the Alik’r Desert. The desert was inhabited only by the nomadic Redguards.
High Rock is the farthest north-western region of the Empire of Tamriel in the Elder Scrolls Series. It borders Hammerfell to the south-east and Skyrim to the east. It is mainly populated by the Bretons. High Rock and the Summerset Isles are the only provinces in Tamriel that do not share a land-border with Cyrodiil.
Morrowind, formerly known as Resdayn and sometimes called Dunmereth, is a province in the northeastern corner of Tamriel. It is divided into two main parts: the mainland of the same name, and the island of Vvardenfell, which are separated by the Inner Sea. Solstheim is also considered to be part of the province as of 4E 16, before which it was a part of Skyrim. Morrowind is the homeland of the formerly the Chimer and now the Dunmer, also known as Dark Elves. Although the Tribunal was a great influence in politics, Morrowind currently is ruled by King Hlaalu Helseth from the city of Blacklight.
Orsinium, also called Nova Orsinium, is an Orcish city province located within Tamriel. While technically being under the sovereignty of the Empire, Orsinium has in the past not been readily accepted by the other provinces of Tamriel. However, in 3E 399, Emperor Uriel Septim VII sought to improve relationships between the Empire and Orsinium through diplomacy, increased trade, and confederacy. Orsinium is located inside the Breton province of High Rock, in the west of Tamriel and as such Orcs co-inhabit the region alongside Bretons.
Skyrim is the northernmost landmass of the continent of Tamriel, and is the site of one of the earliest -if not the earliest- civilization founded and governed by Men during the Merethic Era, many thousands of years ago. These early Men arrived on Tamriel by sailing south from the ancient continent of Atmora, the northern-most pinnacle of the world. In present day, Skyrim is home mainly to the direct descendants of these Atmorans, a people known as the Nords: Large, hardy men and women who are notorious for their militancy and innate resistance to frost and frost magic, both a consequence of the cold, harsh climate of their homelands. Bordered by Morrowind to the east, Cyrodiil to the south, Hammerfell to the southwest, and High Rock to the west, Skyrim forms the uppermost province of the continent of Tamriel. To the northeast the Sea of Ghosts borders the Hold of Winterhold, and far northeast lies the island of Solstheim. Skyrim has nine holds, each is governed by a Jarl, who keep civility and order in their designated hold. Jarls are mostly independent, but swear fealty to Skyrim’s High King.
The Summerset Isles (also Sumurset Isle and, rarely, Summurset Isle), or Alinor (during the Fourth Era), is an archipelago consisting of the three major islands of Summerset, Auridon, and Artaeum located southwest of Tamriel, west of Valenwood. The province is home to the Altmeri people. The islands were considered part of the Tamrielic Empire, although they reside in the Abecean Sea.
The Summerset Isles forms part of the Third Aldmeri Dominion, the union of Valenwood, the Summerset Isles and the client states of Elsweyr (Anequina and Pelletine). Prior to the coup d’état in 4E 22, the isles were ruled by a monarch, who, after the isles assimilation into the Cyrodiilic Empire was subordinate to the Emperor. The aforementioned coup d’état was orchestrated by the nationalist political party known as the Thalmor who’ve since ruled over the islands as well as the Dominion. The party takes its name from ruling party of the First Aldmeri Dominion, made up of Altmeri Canonreeves, Bosmeri Treethanes, and a handful of Khajiiti Chieftains, who served as the ruling party in the Dominion as well as the diplomatic corps, a para-military unit and the Committee of Alliance Relations. The Thalmor handle all processes of governement and project their nationalist dogma through these channels. It is unclear whether the Thalmor serve as the "inner-sanctum" of the Dominion, or as a sort of oligarchy class of aristocrats and warlocks. However the Thalmor are generally regarded as the established elite thanks to their magicka affinity genetically predisposed in the Altmeri race. It is also known that the second most powerful governor of the Isles, and one of the most powerful sorcerers in Tamriel, is the Arcane Arch-Magister, the leader of the great Crystal Tower.
Valenwood is a south-western region of the Empire of Tamriel, and home to the Wood Elves. Valenwood is one of the smaller provinces of Tamriel, it has an area of roughly 61,300 sq. miles and is a largely uninhabited forest wilderness. The coasts of Valenwood are dominated by mangrove swamps and sub-tropical rain forests, while heavy rainfalls nurture the temperate inland rain forests. The Bosmer live in clanhouses at sites scattered along the coast and through the interior, connected only by undeveloped foot trails. The few Imperial roads traverse vast dense woodlands, studded with tiny, widely separated settlements, and carry little trade or traffic of any kind. Furthermore, the nation is home to giant, migratory trees, such as Falinesti, that house their cities. Much of the region is impenetrable mangrove and coastal rain forest, with few grasslands or glade areas until further north near the Strident Coast. It is "a sea of endless green, a maze of foliage with half-hidden cities growing like blooms from a flower", and "the home of the Bosmer is Tamriel’s garden" Domica Redwort is a herb grown by many residents of Valenwood for their beautiful and showy flowers. They attain a height of about three feet and have feathery leaves; the flowers are usually bright red. In addition to their beauty, they are said to have magical abilities to enhance the appearance of anyone who carries or wears one of the flowers.
